ROLAND VERNON PIERCE

          Roland V. Pierce, 80, of 3221 Villa Vista Drive died of a heart
ailment Monday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.  Services will be at 11
a.m. Saturday at Hamilton's Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Laurel Hill
Cemetery.
          Mr. Pierce, a lifelong Des Moines resident, retired after 28
years as a Des Moines police officer, was a Navy veteran of World War II
and had been a member of Capitol Hill Christian Church, Iowa Chiefs of
Police, East Gate Masonic Lodge and the Iowa State Policeman's Association. 
He was also past president of Des Moines Police Burial Association and past
commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Des Moines post.
          Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; three sons, Melvin of Santee,
Calif., Duane of Des Moines and Ralph of Plymouth, Ill.,; three daughters,
Marjorie Charter and Carol Gordon, both of Des Moines, and Phyllis Bautista
of Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Muriel Reeves of Des Moines; 23
grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
          Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. 
Memorial contributions may be made to his church.
