NELLIE D. (HANCOCK) BROWN

          Mrs. Nellie D. Brown, 87, of 1223 South Seventh street, died
yesterday at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's hospital.  She had been in ill
health for the past year and a half.
          The daughter of Isaac and Rachel Craig Hancock, she was born Jan.
22, 1871, near Argyle.  She had been a resident of Keokuk for the last 19
years, and at the time of her death was making her home with her daughter,
Mrs. C. F. Welch.
          On Oct. 31, 1905, she was married to Payor P. Brown in Keokuk.
          She was a member of the United Presbyterian church, the Ladies
Aid, and the Missionary society.
          She was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, and her
husband, who died on Sept. 9, 1939.
          Surviving are one son, Harry L. Brown, of Nauvoo; two daughters,
Mrs. W. L. (Elizabeth) Owen, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Mrs. C. F. (Nell) Welch,
of Keokuk; four grandchildren, Ward and Keith Welch, of Keokuk and Diana
and Steven Brown of Nauvoo; and several nieces, nephews and other
relatives.
          Funeral service will be held at the DeJong Funeral Home at 2:00
p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Robert A. Foster officiating.
          Burial will be in the Hickory Grove cemetery.
