D. A. G. Hancock, a highly respected citizen died at his home
near New Boston, IA., at 1:25 a.m., Feb. 6, 1918, at the age of 58 years, 7
months and 3 days; having been born near Argyle, Ia., May 3, 1859. At a
young age he was married to Miss Mary E. Wilsey, March 31, 1880. To this
union was born seven children, three of whom are dead and four living,
Leon, the eldest son of Ft. Worth, Texas; Verda, wife of W. J. Hamilton, of
New Boston; Bryan and Ethyl, who still reside at the home farm with the
surviving bereaved wife and mother. Besides his immediate family, Mr.
Hancock also leaves to mourn his loss three brothers and one sister: Will
Hancock of Donnellson, Ia.; I. A. Hancock of Kingman, Kans.; H. M. Hancock
of Riverdale, Calif., and Mary M. Washburn of Layton, Calif. A twelve days
old grandchild and namesake, William Ayers, son of W. J. And Verda Hamilton
also survives him. The deceased was an exceptionally successful farmer and
besides his agricultural pursuits was a recognized figure in the political
and social life of the community; having been honored by several important
posts in the township.
His home life was an unusually happy one, he being a devoted
husband and father and never so happy as when surrounded by all his family
and friends, though he never ceased to grieve for his eldest daughter
Pearle, wife of B. West, who preceded her father in death some three years
ago.
Mr. Hancock, while not being of the most robust health, the last
few months was always active in the management of his farm, which was
worked by his younger son Bryan, who was only two weeks ago united in
marriage to Miss Hazel Vermazen of Charleston, Ia.
On January 26 Mr. Hancock took a heavy cold which rapidly
developed into pneumonia. A trained nurse from Graham hospital, Keokuk,
was engaged and all that science and the loving care of the immediate
family was done to combat the dread malady, but to no avail and the silent
reaper removed from the home one who was loved and honored by his family
and friends alike.
