CHARLES I. REED

          Charles I. Reed, 74, of Hidden Valley Trailer Court, died at 9:10
p.m., Sept. 20, 1996, at his home.
          He was born September 10, 1922, in Ottumwa to Burley and Alice
Carson Reed.
          He served with the Marine Corp during World War II and was a
resident of Ottumwa all his life.  He was a sheet metal worker, having been
an employee of John Morrell and Company for 30 years.  He was a member of
Ottumwa Baptist Temple and a lifetime member of Walter B. Schafer Post No.
775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
          He is survived by a son, Gene Reed of Ottumwa; three daughters,
Alice Weir of Milan, Ill., Sue Smith of Ottumwa and Charlotte Williams of
Davenport; a stepdaughter, Vicki Baugh of Peoria, Ill.; 14 grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren and a brother, Frank Reed Sr. of Ottumwa.
          He was preceded in death by his parents; a companion, Mary
Armentrout; a brother, James and a sister, Gladys Mc Allister.
          The service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home, the
Rev. Greg Lockett of Ottumwa Baptist Temple officiating.  Military services
will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign
Wars and O. B. Nelson Post No. 3 of American Legion.  Burial of the
cremains will be in Shaul Cemetery.
          Visitation will be after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home with
family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
          Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Jr. and Todd Huff, Jesse Reed,
Chase and Lewis Smith, Mike Van De Voort, Rob Saylor, Robert Little and
James Kumm.
          Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wapello County, 312 E. Alta
Vista, Ottumwa.
