Burley Reed, 78, of 728 S. Moore, died at Ottumwa Hospital at
9:15 p.m. Saturday following a long illness.
He was a former employee of John Morrell & Co., and later
operated a grocery store for about 10 years. He served six years as
director of the Upper Oak Ridge Schools.
The son of Ira and Sarah Stocker Reed, he was born in Wapello
County Nov. 24, 1890. He had been an Ottumwa resident most of his life and
was a member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple and F. O. E. No. 114.
He married Alice M. Carson June 21, 1917, at Waterloo. She
survives. Also surviving are three sons, Frank E. Of Ottumwa Route 4,
Charles I. Of Ottumwa, and James B. Of White Bluff, Tenn.; one daughter,
Mrs. Gladys Mc Allister of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Johnson and Mrs. Ella Strong,
both of Des Moines.
The service will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel
conducted by the Rev. A. D. Pringle of Ottumwa Baptist Temple. Burial will
be in Shaul Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Harry M. And Harry M. Jr., Jerry D., and
Michael Clark; Lyle A. Cochell and Timothy Huff.
The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service.
